This book takes place in the 1040's to the 1050's. It is a story about a boy who wants to be storiar (story teller) but his father and all his family get killed and he looses his ability to speak, because some of the enemy cut out his tongue. You will follow Shadow, the main character, as he learns to work as a slave, read, write, and mingle with monks. He later becomes the King's right hand paige (helper) and serves in the army.
